Artist's Comments

I often walked in front of his house, always intrigued by his apartment filled with millions objects. I decided to knock on his door, to meet the man and his environment. His name is François, he is 67 years old and he made the vietnam war in 72 according to his words. Here I go into his world, but at the same time he enters the mine, I manage, it becomes my actor.

Critiques

:iconcolinluxton:
Great photo.

I am interested in how much control you are pushing on to your subjects. You say in your profile that you like to ';position' the people you meet into compositions that 'beautify' them. (I hope that's a fair reading.) I found my interest in your photos was questioned a little when I read this.

Composing a figure, ie 'controlling' their position too much, for me, acts against the freshness of engaging with the figure and their surroundings on their own terms. I would like to think that your subjects didn't feel they had to perform for the camera and that their posture and poses came from a comfortable rapport they felt they shared with you rather than one, however politely, imposed.

It is unclear in this particular photo whether you are imposing too much--and this is always subjective--on the subject. I could well be jumping at shadows but I believe the agency of the subject should always, always be respected. What I love about your photos is your courage in engagement with unfamiliar people, especially evident with you adventuring into their homes.

Thanks for the picture. Great work.

I learned not to fear the opinions and beliefs of others but to recognize them as honest, heartfelt, different, to be respected, and wrong.
