Naked Stranger Takes Art Of Photography Show

A photograph of a 53-year-old naked man, sitting on a child's chair, beat out 15,000 other entries from across the world in the Art of Photography competition in San Diego this weekend.

Benoit Paille, who made the unusual portrait, met the man on the street one day. Paille, who often asks elderly strangers if he can photograph them, was invited to the fellow's home. To his surprise, the man, who had recently lost his mother, chose to express his loneliness by removing his clothes and crouching on a tiny chair.

"It is a remarkable photograph in its piercing representation of an acute and specific human state," explains the show's sole judge, Charlotte Cotton, the head of the photography department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Cotton, who sifted through thousands of photos by amateurs and professionals alike, says she was searching for photos that capture the wonder of the world -- whether through connections with strangers or kin. Another one of Cotton's favorites was Martine Fougeron's photograph of her teen sons and their friends, reclining on colorful bean bags.

"What I love about it," says Cotton, over the phone after the show, "is that she has a digital maturity, but there's also that sense of someone taking out the camera for the first time, this freshness."

J'essaie d'aller plus loin dans la rencontre des individus, dans leur intimité. En choisissant des étrangers dans la rue ou en faisant du porte-à-porte, je choisis mes modèles pour leur beauté, non pas esthétique, mais émotive. En dirigeant mes modèles et en les modelant à ma guise, je tente de créer des portraits plus vrais que nature, de capter un regard qui n'existerait pas sans mon intervention.

Concernant la photo elle-même, j'utilise des processus numériques pour transformer les couleurs et la lumière. Dans mes photos, l'arrière-plan pointe de toutes ses lumières vers le point culminant, le modèle lui-même. Je travaille de préférence avec un éclairage naturel pour ensuite le dénaturer et le pousser vers le surnaturel. De sorte que la coloration de mes photos n'est plus seulement un enrobage du sujet, mais plutôt son attribut. Mes photographies démontrent une recherche esthétique, sans toutefois compromettre l'essentiel, l'essence du sujet et sa valeur émotionnelle. Embellir le brut dans le même processus que la pub, embellir le laid et le rendre majestueux est important pour moi. Puisque dans le monde contemporain envahi par la pub, l'esthétisme est important pour capter l'œil du spectateur. J'utilise les mêmes outils que la pub: image forte, caractère excessif, provocation, image parfaite. Non pas dans un but mercantile, mais pour déasser la pub elle-même avec une visée humaine sincère, primordiale.

Toute cette attention portée au rendu final de l'image est une manière d'exercer mon contrôle afin de pénétrer dans l'intimité profonde du sujet et de son environnement. Ceci afin de lui faire révéler des histoires et des émotions qui à prime abord sont invisibles sans l'intervention de l'artiste. De là peut alors naître des séquences narratives uniques. Tout cela dans un but, celui d'aller plus loin dans la connaissance de ce qu'est l'intimité des autres et ainsi déasser la vision que les sujets ont de leur propre intimité.

Les portraits de BenoîtP recèlent  un désir pervers de pénétrer l'intimité des gens qui frôle presque le voyeurisme.   Modèles fragiles, transformés pour arborer une fière allure.  Mais dans leurs yeux persiste une incongruité relevant de la catharsis.  Effet voulu de pure provocation afin que les flashs de ces images rebondissent dans la tête des gens tel un esprit sournois voulant marquer la conscience.   Provenant de partout et de nulle part, les modèles de BenoîtP deviennent étrangers à eux-mêmes parce choisis sans savoir pourquoi.   Lui sait, l'adrénaline a parlé, le glas a sonné, l'effluve dégagée par la morphologie l'a happé : joues creuses, obèses, anorexiques, plissés, ridés, cicatrisés.  Dans cet univers, le Père-Noël secoue son habit parsemé de poudre blanche qui n'a aucun lien avec la neige.

  
Montrer sans montrer.  Derrière cet avant-plan parfois dérangeant, un autre monde semble se lever.  L'artiste s'est mis à l'œuvre d'une façon différente.  Une nostalgique coloration se déploie, teintes provenant d'un autre temps, rappel cinématographique de l'âge argentique.  À l'ère des faux-semblants vient résonner l'arrière-plan parfait, liché, lifté.  


Montrer sans montrer.   L'histoire prend forme, de l'avant à l'arrière.  Un visage en pleurs, suintant de détresse dans une atmosphère d'euphorie bigarrée.  BenoîtP frise parfois la folie dans sa quête d'esthétisme.  Pointant vers le modèle, l'arrière-plan sert de repère pour manipuler l'avant.
Bien que la provocation semble souvent au cœur de son art, BenoîtP s'inspire de beauté pure.  Tout ce qui peut avoir un sens graphique peut devenir sujet parce qu'il a aussi l'art du camouflage.  Ce qui rebute à prime abord peut devenir alléchant au premier regard.  Agissant tel un pointilliste sur l'image, il superpose réalité et vérité à la recherche du détail, habité par cet élan de vouloir montrer ce que personne ne veut voir.  


De nature éclectique, tous les sujets sont propices à la manipulation de la couleur parce que rien n'est effacé : « Photoshop fait partie de mon processus de création, c'est mon pinceau à couleurs que j'utilise non pas pour changer les apparences mais plutôt comme une chambre de développement. »  Dans l'immensité qui les entoure, cristaux glacés et fluides changent de personnalité, de paysages en terrisages, ras au sol, bien centrés, dans un cadrage calculé.
